Marmite vs Vegemite
There are many different brands of yeast extract spread from various countries in the world. For those of you who have lived in the UK, Marmite is a name that resonates all too well. It’s one of those foods that you either love or hate. It’s like an acquired taste for some, but for others it's a part of life that cannot be ignored. Down Under, Vegemite is the spread dominating cupboards!
These spreads have become a staple in many households across each country, but there are many who cannot get on board due to their strong flavour or texture which can be an acquired taste!
But there IS one question that's many of us Marmite/Vegemite fanatics want to know: which one tastes better?
Marmite
Marmite in texture is sticky and syrupy, almost like molasses, and is made from brewer's yeast. Its distinct flavour can be described as strong, savoury, salty and earthy - if you've not tried it, then think along the lines of dark soy sauce. Brits are known to be pretty creative when finding different ways to incorporate food into dishes, and Marmite is no different! It can be used in sandwiches, as a savoury flavouring agent in soups and stews, as a glaze or in a marinade for meats, and even on pizza! In our opinion, the best way to enjoy Marmite is spread lightly on buttered toast. Yum!
Vegemite
Vegemite, on the other hand, has a much thicker texture than Marmite, and is more of a spreadable paste. It is also a bit darker in colour, almost black, whereas Marmite is more brown. Whilst also made from leftover brewer's yeast, Vegemite has added vegetable extracts (hence the name) and spices. In terms of taste, Vegemite is known to pack a bit more of a punch compared to its British counterpart. Vegemite is commonly spread on toasted bread, paired with cheese or avocado or cut into strips to dip into soft-boiled eggs.
So which is better?
When it comes to taste, there isn't a huge difference between these two famous spreads. If you have not tried either, then Marmite might be a easier introduction than its slightly stronger counterpart. However, texture is an important factor to consider here as well; the texture of Marmite may be too gloopy and messy for some and they would prefer the paste texture of Vegemite for spreading. Whichever you think is the best, the key to both is a light spread!
Where to find both
